Vienna, June 27 , SPA -- UEFA's Executive Committee called Friday for the European Commission to support the idea of introducing a quota for home-grown players at Europe's professional clubs, according to dpa. UEFA said after its meeting in Vienna that it had approved a document to be presented to the French Presidency of the EU, calling for the European Council to "declare its unanimous support the concept of minimum numbers of home grown players, or similar policies, in professional teams sports' squads."
Europe's ruling body said it also wanted "more effective protection of young players and training clubs and, where appropriate, stricter regulation of the international movement of minors."
UEFA president Michel Platini is looking to push through tough new guidelines on home-grown player quotes against the wishes of some of Europe's top clubs, who see the plan as an attempt by the organization to seize greater control over the running of international football. The ruling body FIFA and its boss Joseph Blatter aims to introduce a so-called 6+5 rule in which at least six home-grown players and not more than five foreigners are in starting lineups from 2012 onwards. Talks have been held and further are set, but EU officials have already said that the quotes would violate laws such as on freedom of employment. --SPA
